Tennis elbow in padel: How to recognize it, treat it and avoid it.

La epicondilitis en el pádel: Reconocerla, Tratamiento y Evitarla.

We are possibly facing one of the most frequent injuries among padel players, along with knee injuries: tennis elbow in padel.

It is an inflammation of the epicondylar tendons that connect the muscles of the hand and forearm to the epicondyle on the outer side of the elbow.

In the following image we can see exactly the point where these tendons attach.

How can we tell if we have tennis elbow? Most common symptoms.

At Stock Padel we recommend seeing a specialist who, after the relevant tests, will diagnose the exact injury.

However, epicondylitis, also known as “tennis elbow”, causes several symptoms:

  • Sharp pain on the outer side of the elbow.
  • Pain when gripping the padel racket or any object.
  • Pain when lifting any weight

In short, tennis elbow usually causes sharp pain in the outer region of the elbow when we pick up something with some weight and make movements with the hand or forearm.

What can I do if I have tennis elbow? Treatment.

As we recommended above, once a specialist has confirmed that we have tennis elbow, they should be the one to tell us which treatment to follow.

The most common exercises or techniques to recover from this injury are usually the following:

  • Apply ice to the affected area when symptoms appear, for 30 minutes, at 4-hour intervals.
  • Rest will also be part of the treatment.
  • Take anti-inflammatories as ointment or pills (always under the supervision of the specialist).
  • Proper stretching should be your routine during recovery.

In general, tennis elbow has a good prognosis, although it takes several months to recover fully.

On certain occasions, infiltrations of different compounds (hyaluronic acid or blood plasma) are performed on the damaged tendons.

How to avoid suffering from tennis elbow? Some recommendations.

At Stock Padel, we believe we should do everything in our power to avoid injuring ourselves with the classic tennis elbow. Here are some recommendations so that our elbow suffers as little as possible while we play padel.

– Choose the right type of racket: By this we mean its shape, the type of rubber or its weight. It is very important to know these factors, and to let a specialist guide us.

– Learn the proper technique for each movement or shot. This is one of the main causes of getting tennis elbow while playing padel. Each movement or shot requires a technique that we must know.

Acquiring that technique will be possible if we go to a qualified coach and take padel lessons. We strongly recommend devoting time to learning the technique properly; we will avoid not only tennis elbow, but many other injuries to our body.

– We must play padel at the intensity that our physical condition allows. Avoiding overexertion is a key factor in whether or not we get injured.

In our article “3 reasons why I get injured”, you can read more about the features a racket must have to avoid tennis elbow.
